Mental Illness Doesn't Mean You Are Crazy

By Robert D. Grupe, Prevention Coordinator

Approximately 40 million people in the United States will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime, however, only one in five will seek professional help. Mental illnesses are treatable health problems, just like cancer or heart disease. People do not see this as being true and avoid getting help to avoid being called "crazy" or "not quite right". According to the National Mental Health Association regarding how the public perceives depression, 43 percent of Adults in America still view depression as a personal weakness.

Some common signs of mental illnesses include the marked personality changes, confused thinking, strange or grandiose ideas. Prolonged and severe depression with apathy or extreme highs and lows may be a good indication there is a problem. The person may begin substance abusing and withdraw from society. Delusions, hallucinations, or hearing voices that are not really there is a good indication that something may be wrong. Severe anger or hostility out of proportion to the situation is also a possible indication of a mental illness. This is only a few of the many symptoms that point to possible mental illness.

If someone that you know suffers from mental illness, do not pretend that everything is okay. Be compassionate, understanding and offer your total support to them. Do not blame them for causing worry or family problems as they cannot stop this. Finally, remember that mental illness is medical in nature and help is available from trained professionals.
