Bringing Your Loved One Home for the Holidays
By the staff of Heartland Human Services
Thanksgiving and Christmas are two special holidays when many families bring their loved ones home from long term care. If you decide to do so, remember that you and they may be entering unfamiliar territory. Here are some tips that will make the visit more comfortable for your visitor and yourself and will foster a sense of warmth and holiday spirit.
- Take time and familiarize your guest with the home.
- Keep gathering areas and hallways clear for those who use wheelchairs or walkers.
- Know his or her medicine or treatment regiments.
- Set aside and prepare portions of the meal that comply with any dietary restrictions.
- Be aware of the noise, light and temperature levels in the home.
- If you have them, use holiday decorations that belong to your loved one and keep some of their traditions alive.
- Don't allow your loved one to sit alone for long periods of time. Make them a part of your holiday celebration.
