Memory - Ways to make the most of it
- Make sure information is clear, simple and relevant. Don't waste time trying to remember trivial and unimportant material.
- Allow enough time, minimize distractions, and maximize attention. Try not to overload the system.
- Break down information to be learned into small parts. Learn one part at a time.
- Repeat information out loud to check for understanding.
- Make the most of memory aids
- Daily notebook or memory diary
- Notepad next to phone to write down messages
- Wall calendar in a prominent position at home
- Write lists of things to do or say (before making a phone call or visiting the doctor)
- Use neon colored post-it notes as simple reminders
- Keep eye glasses handy by keeping them on a cord around the neck
- Use an alarm for a prompt to take medications or remember other important events
- Use small tape recorders to store new information to refer to at a later time
- Put medication next to your toothbrush or tea kettle to serve as a prompt to take each day
- Label cupboard doors and drawers to tell what is in them
- Don't dwell on what has been forgotten. It only increases frustration and decreases self-confidence
